NNSCI Member Keith Lee & Wife Gloria Visiting Dargle School
September 15, 2011
Visiting Dargle Primary School in KwaZulu-Natal By Keith Lee, Senior Life Member, Northern Nevada Chapter In August 2011, my wife Gloria and I went on safari in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa with professional hunter Garry Kelly of Garry Kelly Safaris. We had a very successful and enjoyable hunt—taking eight plains game animals. As terrific as the safari was, the most rewarding part of our trip was delivering SafariCare "Blue Bags", one full of school supplies and one full of medical supplies. Garry Kelly and his wife, Kate, made all of the arrangements for us. The school supplies were sponsored by the Northern Nevada Chapter of Safari Club and were delivered to the Dargle Primary School, about an hour and half's drive north of Durban. Gloria and I were accompanied by Garry, Kate and their five-year old twin daughters, Jade and Jasmine. There are approximately 130 students, ranging in age from 5 to 13, in grades K through 7 at Dargle. After meeting the entire student body and presenting the much-needed and appreciated supplies, we were entertained by the "Dargle School Dance Team." We then visited each classroom and observed firsthand the dedication of the teachers and thirst for learning of the students. On the final day of our safari, we delivered the medical supplies, which were sponsored by the Sutter Buttes Chapter of SCI in California to the Skills and Healthcare Center just outside of Mkhuze Game Reserve. To say that the supplies were needed is an understatement. We are already planning our next safari with Garry and I can assure you will again deliver Blue Bags. As a final note: Garry has been a professional hunter since 1970 and has guided a number of Safari Club members but this was the first time he ever participated in the delivery of the humanitarian bags. Please consider taking a Blue Bag on your next safari.
